Michael Wedge and his wife Debra first walked into the Brunswick Midcoast Humane Society in 2014, hoping to find a dog who could accompany him as he faced life challenges as a U.S. Navy veteran with post-traumatic stress disorder.

In our small way, Maine Paws for Veterans is making a big difference. Maine Paws for Veterans provides service dog training and support to Maine Veterans with Military-related post traumatic stress. Our vision is to improve the quality of life for Maine Veterans by reconnecting them with a sense of belonging, purpose and community. We give shelter dogs a loving home with a deserving Veteran. Through a rigorous 20- week course, Veteran and canine teams train together, build bonds and develop valuable peer relationships with other Veterans. Most importantly, the service dog provides long term relief of post traumatic stress symptoms and is a life-long benefit for the Veteran, their family and support network. Click here to read more...

In public, she was constantly on high alert. “It was exhausting trying to keep an eye on everyone in my environment,” says Schlotterbeck. “I could hold it all in while I was out. But when I’d come home, something small would set me off, which wasn’t fair to my family. I was so tired of feeling so miserable.” Click here to read more...
